Expansion of Rutherford Crossing Planned

Frederick County, Virginia may be getting a few more retail options if all goes according to plan. Vienna, Virginia-based NVRetail has announced that it plans on expanding its Rutherford Crossing retail center which sits just north of Winchester. The popular shopping destination, located at I-81 and Route 11, has become a frequent stop for locals as well as travelers on the interstate. Anchored by several national “big box” stores such as Target and Lowe’s, Rutherford Crossing has continued to perform well despite the slow down in the economy.

Designs for Artisan Center in Rockbridge County

Two years from now drivers on Interstate 81/64 could be able to take exit 205 and find a place where they can buy local arts and crafts, see them as they’re being made, eat and drink local food and wine, tour exhibits about Virginia and its natural and scientific wonders, go on outdoor excursions, and receive tourism information in a high-tech experience. All this would be possible at the new regional artisan and cultural center that a group of Virginia investors, in partnership with Rockbridge County, hopes to open in summer 2014. (more…)

No Milling About for Rebkee Company

Richmond-based The Rebkee Company purchased a 480,000 square-foot building that used to operate as a textile mill in Waynesboro. The original listing price for the property was $5.8 million but Rebkee snatched it for $1.75 million, and the seller financed the deal. (more…)

JMU Construction Responds To Growing Enrollment

Virginia’s General Assembly and governor will receive a substantial funding request for next year’s James Madison University building budget. As student enrollment at JMU has grown, so has its physical footprint. Over $225 million worth of construction is in progress or being planned on campus. Projects include a 53,000 square-foot addition to and renovation of the arts building for almost $43 million, renovation of another hall for over $25 million and a new field hockey stadium for $4.25 million. Educational institutions serving as the catalyst for other developments is nothing new in Virginia. Other universities in the state have experienced similar building booms that helped to shape growth and development in their communities. Examples include VCU in Richmond, GMU in Fairfax, UVA in Charlottesville, and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

Shenandoah County Buildings Going Green

The beautiful spring mountains of Shenandoah County are not the only big green things in the area now: the county’s new Health and Human Services Building and District Courts Building have both achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, a first for the county.
